The Council received from the Registrar a brief report of work done since his arrival and proceeded to establish five committees, namely, the Administrative and Finance Committee initially called the Executive Committee , the School Examinations Committee, the Public Service Examinations Committee, the Professional, Technical and Commercial Examinations Committee, and the Local Committee replaced in by the National Committee.

Over the years, the names of the Committees have changed and new ones have been created. The Committees now include the Administrative and Finance Committee, the Appointments Committee and the Examinations Committee, at both the international and national levels.

In each country, there is a National Committee to which all Local Committees report. Liberia joins WAEC in , becoming the fifth member country. In , an office of the Council was established in Liberia and in January , the Council moved into its separate building in Monrovia. WAEC has contributed greatly to education in Anglophonic countries of West Africa Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia , with the number of examinations they have coordinated, and certificates they have issued.

The council has also formed an endowment fund which has been pivotal to education in West Africa, through lectures and aid to those who cannot afford education.

The council is made up of a team of well-trained and highly motivated staff and has administered Examinations that are valid and relevant to the educational aspirations of member countries. Every year, over three million candidates registered for the exams coordinated by WAEC. The council also helps other examination bodies both local and international in coordinating Examinations. WAEC has a strong committee and its structure is divided into three major parts: International committees, National Committees, and Subcommittees.

The International Committee treat matters affecting all member countries and also harmonizes national views pertaining to policies of the council as a whole.

April 12th, If you are an admissions officers at a school or college or an international credential evaluator, an officer at a professional licensing board, or an employer reviewing credentials from West Africa, you have come across certificates issued by the West African Examinations Council.

The council conducts the following four different categories of examinations: International Examinations National Examinations Examinations conducted in collaboration with other examining bodies Examinations conducted on behalf of other examining bodies 4. Candidates are required to enter and sit for a minimum of 6 core subjects which include the following: English Language Mathematics At least one Nigerian Language a waiver has been given in by the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigerian since At least one science subject Physics, Chemistry or Biology Literature in English, History or Geography Agricultural Science or at least one vocational subject 9.

The ordinances have now been replaced with the Convention which confers legal personality on the Council as an international organization.

Its certificates enjoy international recognition. WAEC has also been promoting the ideals of hard work and honesty in the youth through its awards for outstanding performance in its examinations.
