Great product. We use it in the kitchen more than for brew equipment. Does a great job on pots and pans. Keep it off your cast iron though, it'll take the seasoning off. All Rights Reserved. I will say we have come a long way in a year and have made some very good beers with recipes from BeerSmith.
Love all the info that is on here. Thanks Steve. If you are spending as much or more time cleaning, you are doing well! I use fresh PBW for cleaning out the carboys, then pour the majority of the PBW into 5-gal buckets to use for cleaning siphons, funnels, bottling wand and other items, tossing the loose trub which has settled to the bottom of the carboy.
From there the PBW bucket goes to de-labeling and cleaning bottles. When I am brewing steady, as I often am through the winter months, it is about a 3 to 4 week use of the PBW solution depending on my supply of bottles which need recycling.
So being a new brewer, I have more questions. How long do you typically leave the PBW in the carboy, fermenter or corny keg? I typically rinse all well with hot water before cleaning with the PBW.
What ratio do you use PBW to water? I leave PBW in hot water las long as it takes to clean the carboy. Usually 30 minutes. Same for kegs though you can't see though so you take it on faith. Mix PBW and hot water exactly as the instructions advise.
If you do not, it may either take much longer to clean or wastes PBW and require more thorough rinsing. I'll add the same for no rinse sanitizers. A week? As long as its not nasty? I can put a lid on it. I don't feel the need to keep it over a week but it would be nice to use it for several days in a row. Does it lose effectiveness? I know it tends to remain slippery feeling and alkaline. Got Trub? Well-Known Member.
While some store and use it over time it works best when hot. I just make what I need as I need it with hot water. Scimmia Well-Known Member. PBW is an oxygen based cleaner. The oxygen will dissipate in a matter of hours if not sealed. Edcculus Well-Known Member. As far as I know, once its mixed, its pretty much shot after a few hours. I just emailed [email protected] to try to get some clarification. I'll post what I find out.
Got a response just now: Adam, PBW out of solution will last for a year and maybe even longer. In solution we say it's at its best the first 24hours, after that the oxygenation will start to leave the product. Hot water is best when using it, between is the normal temps to use it at, but can be used at a lower temp as well. We always look at Time, Temp and concentration. How much time do you have, what temp can you run it at and what concentration are you using. You can adjust as needed.
